P5 Learners demonstrate their understanding of their chosen media product by analysing:

a) the product’s impact and effect on the audience

b) relevant issues of representation, c) relevant legal and/or ethical issues, d) role of relevant regulatory bodies
The scene features four of the five main characters. Only one of the 5 main characters is female. This can make less females want to watch the show as there is not an equal, or majority of female characters. The female character is one of the smarter characters however in the show which flips the stereotype of females being dumb and only in the show for a love interest. The female character is told she is ugly and looks like a bird in the show as well which, while not very kind, also flips the stereotype of females only being in shows for love interests. The female character is also not the lowest status in the show out of the 5 main characters, the lowest being Charlie.
The majority of the actors are friends outside of the show. All the actors are also married to other actors in the show and reinforces the friendship outside of the show and makes the chemistry in the show better. There aren't many characters in the show who are not white which can turn off some fans from watching the show. The show features a majority of characters who are around 20-30, however some characters such as frank are much older. This can bring in more viewers as the age range is more diverse. The clothing and locations fit in well for the characters as they are meant to just be normal people working in a bar, A large amount of the costumes actually belong to the actors in the show which suggests that the characters personalities might rub off from the actors.
The show can be quite violent and feature violence. However I think that the humour of the show and the over the top violence when there is some, makes people understand that they shouldn't copy what is going on in the show. I think the only way people would copy what is happening in the show in real life is if the person was dumber than the characters in the show (Who are very dumb). There are some episodes which show characters performing acts which might give some viewers ideas to recreate these scenes.
The show legally can show two of the main stars on crack (in the show) as the show has a 15 certificate. However ethically this can be quite disturbing to some viewers as you see the (fake) drugs being taken. Similarly in some episodes some actors go blackface which they are legally aloud to do however ethically it is very wrong to do.

The show has a age rating of 15 from the BBFC in the UK. The show did not need to be cut and edited for the UK audience.  The 15 age rating means that the show cannot show discriminatory language or themes. The show can show some drug usage but not promote it, Dangerous behaviour (Such as hanging, suicide) should not dwell on detail which could be copied this does not appear in most of the show however some episodes feature actions similar to this. The show features violence, some mild nudity, and strong language which all fit under the 15 age rating. The show is rated Mature in Australia, PG13 in Singapore for the edited version for TV and M18 in Singapore for the unedited version. In Russia it is an 18+ and in the US it has the rating TV-MA. the high age rating makes sense as some parts of the show can be quite explicit and vulgar to foreign audiences.

The BBFC exists to show people what is appropriate for different viewers and what the film will contain. If this did not exist then it could lead to younger people being "scarred for life" by watching inappropriate content. However the main reason for this conception is that the media product is an easy way out for people to blame their violence on however the real reasoning is usually due to issues in the household or mental health issues.  Whilst the majority of the time the BBFC is correct in their ratings, the rating is purely a guideline and can be changed by councils. Also nothing is stopping a child from watching the film/show other than them getting hold of it. In America they have the Motion Picture Association of America film rating system. This system works similarly to the UK system however it features much wider gaps which are stricter.

Comments

  1. For merit discuss why the BBFC exist? Are they important? Which regulatory body exists in US for this show? Do the US and UK approach regulation differently? Are the US more strict with some things and relaxed with others? Give examples

  3. 'scarred for life' is not a mature exploration of the issues. What are people really afraid of when it comes to young children seeing adult content? Discuss this fear.

  4. there is is perception that young people would be permanently harmed by such content ...press has blamed media products a lot for violent crime by young people but is the product really to blame? What has really caused the individual to act out violently in real life?...explore this for a bit and you will meet distinction! (yay)
